Learn how to handle cougar encounters

Are you planning a hike in the forest, mountain biking down a wilderness trail or an overnight campout in the woods?

Chances are you will be in cougar country.

What do they eat? Where do they live? How should you handle an encounter?

Rocky Spencer, a biologist with the state Fish and Wildlife Department, will answer those questions.

Learn about cougars at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Northwest Stream Center in McCollum Park, 600 128th St. SE, Everett.

Tickets are $4 for Adopt-A-Stream Foundation members or $6 for nonmembers. Reserve a seat by calling 425-316-8592.

Spruce up Whidbey fairgrounds

In anticipation of the fair Aug. 19-22, the Island County Fair Association is hosting a community workday from 4 p.m. until dark Wednesday at 819 Camano Ave. in Langley.

Volunteers are needed to help clean out debris from behind the barns. Bring gloves, rakes and shovels. Those who would rather garden are asked to bring small hand tools. A load of beauty bark is available, and there’s always weeding to be done.

Snacks and beverages will be provided. Volunteers are encouraged to bring clothes hangers for marshmallow forks.

The fair is 90 percent volunteer-driven. No county money supports fairground maintenance.
