Former Washington Gov. Gary Locke is now the U.S. ambassador to China.
The U.S. Senate voted unanimously today to confirm his appointment by President Barack Obama.
Locke, who has been serving as the U.S. Secretary of Commerce, is the first Chinese-American in this post. He will succeed Jon Huntsman.
U.S. Sen. Patty Murray, D-WA., congratulated Locke in a statement issued after the vote.
“Making sure the U.S.-China partnership continues to work for both nations is absolutely critical to ensuring our ability to compete and succeed in the 21st century global economy. I look forward to working with Ambassador Locke to make sure our nation’s relationship with China helps businesses, farmers, and the economy in Washington state and across the country,” she said.
