Man kills driver in late-night Edmonds shooting; suspect at large

Witnesses reported a gunman on foot fired multiple times at a car near the intersection of 236th Street and Edmonds Way.

EDMONDS — A gunman shot a driver to death Wednesday night in Edmonds in what “may have been a chance encounter,” police said.

Around 10:15 p.m., a pedestrian was crossing Edmonds Way at the intersection with 236th Street SW, as the driver was turning left, according to police.

Exactly what happened next remained under investigation, but police later determined there was “no obvious altercation before the suspect opened fire, mortally wounding the victim,” Edmonds police Cmdr. Josh McClure wrote in a press release. Earlier in the investigation, police suggested the driver and pedestrian got into a verbal argument.

Officers arrived to find the driver in critical condition with multiple gunshot wounds.

The suspected shooter was last seen fleeing east on 236th Street on foot, according to police.

The driver, 31, of SeaTac, was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, where he later died.

Witnesses described the shooter as a white or Hispanic young man, in his teens or early 20s, wearing a hooded sweatshirt and all-black clothing. He had curly, dark hair, police said. Multiple police agencies searched for the shooter, with the help of police dogs and drones. He was not found.

Police continued searching Thursday. As of the afternoon, the shooter remained at large.

The Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the identity of the deceased, as well as the official cause and manner of death.

Detectives encouraged anyone with information to contact police at 425-771-0200 or email policetips@edmondswa.gov. Or call 911.

“If you know where the suspect is, do not approach and call 911,” police wrote.
