LYNNWOOD — A truck owner shot two people who he believed were trying to steal his truck, killing one, in Lynnwood early Tuesday.
Around 2:30 a.m., the man heard the “distinctive sound” of his truck being started in the parking lot of the Best Western Alderwood hotel at 19332 36th Ave. W, where he was staying, according to the Lynnwood Police Department.
The man went outside to see his truck parked in the middle of the lot, occupied by an unknown man, police said. The truck was stopped next to another car, which police later determined was a stolen vehicle from Burien.
“A confrontation ensued and shots were fired,” Lynnwood police spokesperson Patrick Fagan said in an email.
The truck owner called 911, and officers arrived within two minutes to find two people with gunshot wounds, a man and a woman.
The man was dead at the scene, slumped over in the driver’s seat with the engine still running.
The woman was outside the truck with gunshot wounds. An aid crew took the woman to a local hospital. Her injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.
The truck owner was detained by police. Officers secured and recovered a loaded firearm. The investigation was ongoing Tuesday.
Police impounded both vehicles to be processed for evidence, pending the execution of a search warrant.
