EVERETT — The body of a man was found Saturday afternoon in the wreckage of a morning fire at a storage facility.
While firefighters were mopping up from the structure fire, they found the body of an adult male inside one of the damaged storage units, said Everett Police spokesman Sgt. Robert Goetz.
Police and fire officials learned earlier in the day that a man may have been living inside a storage unit.
While there is no indication that the fire is an arson, Everett Police arson investigators and detectives were on scene late Saturday afternoon collecting evidence, Goetz said.
The name of the man who died is to be released by the Snohomish County Medical Examiners Office, he said.
The Everett Fire Department was dispatched before 7 a.m. Saturday after receiving a report of smoke and flames coming from a storage facility in the 3800 block of Smith Avenue, said Everett Fire spokesman Assistant Chief Glen Martinsen.
Firefighters attacked the fire from the interior but were forced to withdraw from the building when it became unstable. More firefighters were called out at 8:20 a.m. State Patrol troopers helped to control freeway traffic when smoke from the fire drifted across I-5, just a short distance away, Martinsen said.
Everett Police provided traffic control on the city streets and Snohomish County Public Utility District temporarily shut down power in the area, Martinsen said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, and no damage estimates have been made, he said.
