EVERETT — Marysville police made 80 traffic stops in six hours Monday during a targeted traffic enforcement emphasis on State Avenue in honor of a teenager who died as a passenger in a speeding vehicle.
Since State Avenue became a five-lane configuration, there has been an increase in crashes in the area, prompting targeted enforcement, a Marysville Police Department social media post said. The operation focused on high-priority violations, including speeding and seatbelt usage, along State Avenue between 100th Street Northeast and 116th Street Northeast.
Officers conducted the operation in honor of Noah Martinez, the stepson of Marysville Police Officer Sam Gay, who died on Sept. 1, the post said. Martinez would have turned 16 this month. According to the post, “this operation served as a solemn reminder of the importance of traffic safety.”
During the six hours, officers issued 74 infractions and made two arrests for driving with a suspended license, the post said.
Some residents along State Avenue voiced their support, with one quoted in the post as saying, “Thank you and your officers for the recent efforts on State Ave. I live on State Ave. and have observed the efforts firsthand. Your officer’s work has had positive effect on reducing speeds on State Ave. Again, thank you to you and your team.”
According to the post, State Avenue remains a high-violation and high-crash zone.
