MARYSVILLE — Anyone who leaves an empty trash can sitting around on the street for several days will have it disappear. And they will likely have to pay to get it back.
The city of Marysville recently approved a law requiring that empty containers be removed from city streets or walkways within 48 hours of being emptied. Containers may sit out for 24 hours before pick up.
The city was getting complaints about containers being left out, public works director Kevin Nielsen said.
“They get pushed into the road and kids take them and push them in ditches,” he said. “Or it’s in the middle of the cul-de-sac.”
The city issues the gray plastic containers free. The containers are built with slots that match a lifting mechanism on city garbage trucks.
A serial number on the container is matched to an address. Under the new law, if a container is left out, the city will pick it up and the violator will have to pay the city to bring the container back out, Nielsen said.
The amount paid will vary based on container type. For standard residential containers, the charge is $50.
The law, approved by the City Council Feb. 23, took effect this week.
