There are a number of activities and celebrations honoring veterans in Snohomish County today – a parade in Arlington, ceremonies in Everett and Lynnwood, a spaghetti feed in Stanwood, among others.
But Mill Creek’s celebration is a special one this year. At noon today, the city is holding a groundbreaking ceremony for its new veterans’ memorial at Library Park.
The new memorial comes in part thanks to the efforts of local veterans, Fred Fillbrook and Chuck Wright. The two approached the city council about a memorial and talked about their plan to “any group who’d listen,” said public works director Tom Gathmann.
Today’s ceremony is Mill Creek’s second celebration of veterans this year. In May, the city held its first Memorial Day Parade – also thanks to Fillbrook’s efforts – and more than 3,000 people showed up.
Mill Creek deserves applause for its work to honor those who serve their country. As Fillbrook said: “We owe a lot to our veterans, especially those that didn’t come back.”
