EVERETT — An Everett man reported missing last month is living in Seattle, police said Thursday.
Family and friends of Ken Mackay, 39, were alarmed when he disappeared after leaving home the night of Aug. 11. They feared something had happened to him and launched a major search, canvassing from north Snohomish County to south King County.
They were especially concerned because Mackay was recovering from a bout of pneumonia. His roommate, Glenn Carlson, believed Mackay had left to get cigarettes or take a walk.
Seattle police found Mackay in Seattle, Everett police spokesman Boyd Bryant said. Mackay had left his home, job and family voluntarily, Bryant said.
Mackay made several withdrawals from his bank account and had been paying for hotel rooms in the Capitol Hill area, Carlson said.
"It’s a relief to know he’s out there," Carlson said. "But everyone is still very concerned about him."
Mackay, a certified nursing assistant for 12 years at Fircrest School in Shoreline, may have fled because of financial problems, Carlson said.
"I think he got scared," Carlson said. "Rather than tell me or tell anyone, he ran away."
