MONROE – The reformatory unit at the Monroe Correctional Complex remains on lockdown today, while officials investigate a fight that involved 11 inmates on Monday evening.
No inmates were seriously injured in the fight that happened around 8:20 p.m. Monday at the Washington State Reformatory, said Cathy Kopoian, a spokeswoman for the prison complex. No staff members were hurt.
The reformatory is the biggest unit at the prison complex with about 800 inmates. The reformatory last went under a lockdown on March 26; the lockdown lasted three days. It was also locked down in December after a fight left four people injured, including a correctional officer.
Officials have yet to decide when to bring the reformatory back to normal operation. All the inmates involved in the fight have been placed in the maximum security unit. The inmates are required to stay in their cells in the new $39.5 million unit for 23 hours a day during the investigation.
With about 2,400 offenders, the Monroe prison complex is the largest among the state’s 15 prisons.
