EVERETT — Naval Station Everett is singing a new tune, and it’s singing it a bit louder, too.
The base administration recently boosted the volume of its external speaker system from 70 percent volume to full volume.
The base recently evaluated the system and found it to be too quiet for emergency notification purposes and below the standards set for all U.S. Navy bases, spokeswoman Kristin Ching said via email.
At about the same time, the base changed its morning bugle call from the traditional “Call to Colors” to the national anthem.
Neighbors of the base noticed the change, especially the fact that the call was now 30 percent louder.
After the base received a number of calls, the administration determined that it would be possible to lower the volume 10 percent and still meet the Navy’s requirements.
The Navy’s requirements also call for the national anthem to be played at 8 a.m. at all bases, hence the change in tune, Ching said.
The anthem plays for 90 seconds every morning, three times as long as the previous bugle call.
