OLYMPIA — The Nisqually Indian Tribe is building a $7.9 million administration center, one of many projects helping to transform the small tribe into a major player in south Puget Sound.
Nisqually planning director Joe Cushman said the tribe has come a long way since the days when it operated out of a storefront in Yelm, when it had no land, no housing and no casino.
The Olympian newspaper reported that the tribe now operates the Red Wind Casino. It recently completed a $7.6 million youth and community center and has started building a $20 million, 300-bed correctional facility.
The tribe is also considering a retail market near Norma’s restaurant as well as adding a hotel and expanding the casino.
The new 26,000-square-foot administration building is expected to open in spring 2013.
