Camano Island

Presentation planned on new Cama Beach park

Learn about the opening of the new Cama Beach State Park at a presentation set for today on Camano Island.

The presentation is 7 p.m. at the Camano Multipurpose Center at 141 N. East Camano Drive.

Just a few miles north of Camano Island State Park, Cama Beach State Park is scheduled to open June 21. The beach was the site of a seasonal fishing village, then a camping resort, in the early to middle part of the 1990s.

Local American Indian tribes have objected to the opening of a state park at Cama Beach. Indians camped and fished at the beach before white settlers came to Western Washington.

Washington State Parks acquired the land in the late 1990s, and plans were made to open a state park there.

The Tulalip Tribes asked that work at the site be stopped in 2002, after remains believed to be Indian were found at the site. The request sparked a string of court actions, but the state was eventually allowed to move forward with its plans.
