Seattle: Truck-wheel accidents studied
SEATTLE – At least six crashes blamed on loose truck wheels in the Seattle area since May 1, one of them fatal, have spawned an investigation in Canada and the United States.
Officials with the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance in Washington, D.C., an association of state and federal officials in Canada, Mexico and the United States, began a preliminary inquiry after the first wrecks in May.
The alliance is asking for an accounting of crashes involving loose truck wheels in the U.S. and Canada to get an idea how widespread the problem is.
The most recent accident occurred just after midnight Monday when a Safeway Inc. water truck driver hit an errant semi-truck wheel in Kirkland. The water truck driver narrowly escaped injury, and traffic was backed up for 10 miles on I-405. The vehicle from which the wheel came loose was not identified.
On May 11, John Ellis, 31, of Bothell died when a truck-wheel assembly bounced onto the sport utility vehicle he was driving through Tukwila.
