PORT TOWNSEND — When the Hood Canal Bridge closes for reconstruction this spring, commercial truck drivers will have an alternative to driving a more-than-100-mile detour.
A special ferry will transport trucks from Port Townsend to Edmonds, so trucks moving products from local paper mills and other businesses can get to their destinations more efficiently.
An Issaquah-class ferry will be used for the special route after it is pulled from normal service on the Kingston-Edmonds route.
State ferry officials say the service will run Sunday through Thursday, leaving Edmonds at 8:40 p.m. and departing Port Townsend at 10:40 p.m.
The ferry will have room for six 82-foot tractor-trailers and 86 passenger vehicles, plus 1,200 foot passengers.
Waitsburg: Building collapses, no one hurt
A building housing an antiques store has collapsed in the rural Eastern Washington farming community of Waitsburg.
Blue Mountain Television reported the building was unoccupied when it collapsed about 6:30 p.m. Sunday, and no injuries were immediately reported.
Walla Walla County firefighters are sifting through the rubble in heavy snowfall.
The region has had severe weather for more than a week, but it’s not immediately known whether that contributed to the collapse.
Waitsburg is about 21 miles northeast of Walla Walla in southeast Washington.
Bremerton: Body found along road
The body of a 34-year-old Tacoma man was found just after noon Sunday, concealed partially under a tarp along the side of a Bremerton road.
The Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death, ruling it suspicious because of how the man’s body was found near the intersection, said deputy Scott Wilson, a sheriff’s spokesman. Police don’t know if the man died from exposure to the cold temperatures, or if other means such as drugs or alcohol contributed to his death.
“We do not believe he died of homicidal means and we don’t believe he died here,” Wilson said, clarifying police do not believe the man was killed at the scene, or that he was killed somewhere else and then dumped on the side of the road.
The man’s death raises a number of questions, including how the man — who was reported missing to Tacoma police last week — made it to Kitsap County. Police are trying to find out if he knew people in the area, and are waiting on an autopsy and toxicology report to try and determine how he died.
Oregon: Eight teenage girls escape foiled
Eight teenage girls staged a fake fight and then assaulted three men in a bold escape attempt early Sunday at the Oak Creek Youth Correctional Facility in Albany.
Perrin Damon, a spokeswoman for the Oregon Youth Authority, said the members of an overnight security watch were treated and released from Samaritan Albany General Hospital. One victim, who had a head injury, needed “32 staples to stitch him up,” Damon said.
The incident began when the girls, who live in dormitories, staged a fight to draw the attention of security. The girls, who are between 13 and 17, ambushed those who responded, clubbing them with homemade weapons, Damon said.
The escape ended at the central recreation yard, where the girls were thwarted by high fences. After initially refusing to return to their cells, the girls relented when more police arrived, Damon said.
