Northwest Briefly: State tries eBay again to sell ferry Chinook

SEATTLE — The Washington state ferry Chinook is up for sale again on eBay.

The 10-year-old passenger-only boat was advertised last month with a minimum bid of $4.5 million. There were no takers but Traci Brewer-Rogstad, the ferry system’s deputy executive director, says there were some telephone calls of interest.

The Chinook was relisted on Tuesday at the same minimum price, and as of Thursday morning no bids were listed.

The boat was used on runs between Seattle and Bremerton but has been mothballed for four years.

Fort Lewis: Army files charges in killings

The Army has filed murder, burglary, kidnapping and obstruction of justice charges against a Fort Lewis soldier accused of killing two other soldiers at their home and kidnapping their baby.

Authorities allege Ivette Davila, a chemical operations specialist, shot and killed Sgt. Timothy Miller and his wife, Sgt. Randi Miller, at their home near Tacoma on Saturday night.

She’s accused of taking the couple’s 6-month-old daughter to a home-improvement store, where investigators say she bought muriatic acid, which she poured on the bodies in an attempt to dispose of them.

If the Army makes this a capital murder case, the 22-year-old from Bakersfield, Calif., would face the death penalty.

Ocean Shores: Cans likely held fumigants

The state Department of Ecology says small, silver, unmarked canisters washing up on ocean beaches from Ocean Shores north to Ozette likely held fumigants used to kill pests in the cargo holds of oceangoing ships.

The exact source is unknown. But because of the potential health risk, Ecology officials and the Coast Guard are cooperating in an effort to collect the containers and dispose of them.

Ecology staffers believe the bottles typically contain 500 fumigant tablets meant to be spread throughout a cargo hold.

Anyone who spots a container is asked to note its location and call the agency’s hotline at 360-407-6300.

Spokane: Freeway rail tunnel work to start

State transportation officials say construction starts Monday on a $17 million railroad tunnel that is part of the North Spokane Corridor Freeway project.

The 1,330-foot tunnel will carry Burlington Northern Santa Fe trains under the new freeway in northeast Spokane. The 54-foot-wide tunnel will be made from 444 precast concrete arch segments that will be placed over the tracks, then covered with fill.

The freeway lanes will be built over the new tunnel structure.

The project is expected to be completed in 2009.

Oregon: Strangler of hit man gets $1 million

A Portland jury on Thursday said Susan Kuhnhausen deserves $1 million for the emotional distress she’s suffered from her husband, who hired a hit man to kill her.

Kuhnhausen strangled the would-be killer. And her husband, Michael, was sentenced last year to 10 years in prison.

Her attorney says Kuhnhausen doesn’t expect to collect from her husband.

Lawyer Susan Eggum says Kuhnhausen lives in fear that even from behind bars her husband will hire someone to kill her, and the damage award may discourage such an attempt.
