OLYMPIA — A large portion of the roof of an Olympia high school has collapsed under the weight of snow, ice and water from recent storms.
Assistant Fire Chief Greg Wright of the Olympia Fire Department told KIRO-TV his crews responded just before 5 a.m. when alarms went off at the school.
Wright estimates that more than 2,500 square feet of roof fell into the building. No one was injured.
In 2006, a $10.5 million remodel of the high school was completed, including a new student commons and modernization of the library.
Lt. Ralph Dunbar of the Olympia Fire Department says the school has a flat roof. He advises homeowners and others with flat roofs to make sure storm water is able to drain.
The collapse also broke a natural gas line but crews were able to shut off the gas before it caused any damage to the building.
