EVERETT — Firefighters found one woman dead and one man injured Sunday night during a two-alarm fire at an apartment complex in Lynnwood.
Around 11:40 p.m. Sunday, South County Fire responded to reports of a fire at a two-story apartment complex in the 16000 block of 44th Avenue West, according to a press release. Upon arrival, fire crews discovered the flames were spreading from the first to the second floor and upgraded the response to a “second alarm to bring in more resources.”
More than 70 firefighters responded, including support from Everett, Mukilteo and Bothell fire departments. Icy conditions on the roof made the firefighting effort challenging, the release said.
Firefighters found a deceased woman in her 30s on the first floor of the building, the release said. First responders transported a man in his 30s to Swedish Mill Creek for smoke inhalation. No other injuries were reported.
The fire impacted eight units, resulting in the displacement of 20 people, including 10 children — one of whom is an infant, the release said. Support 7 is assisting those displaced by the fire.
The Snohomish County Fire Marshal’s Office, with assistance from South County Fire, is investigating the cause of the fire.
South County Fire encouraged individuals to check their home’s smoke alarms, which can give someone more time to escape a fire, the release said. Individuals should change the smoke alarm’s replaceable batteries once a year and replace all smoke alarms after 10 years.
