MOUNT ANGEL, Ore. — Beer-swilling revelers won’t be allowed to slap stickers on one another at the annual Mount Angel Oktoberfest, as has long been the custom.
Organizers say the sticker tradition, which started more than 30 years ago at a Blitz-Weinhard tent with a sticker that said "Blitz Me," was disruptive and caused fights.
The tradition got sticky about 10 years ago when people started bringing other stickers to the event with slogans like, "Fresh Meat" and putting them on people who didn’t want them.
Last year, after Oktoberfest visitors were asked to leave their stickers at home, only one Oktoberfest-related arrest took place, compared to 11 arrests in 1999. The ban has also reduced downtown litter.
Eight extra officers will be on duty this year to enforce the ban.
