PORTLAND — Oregon is 155 years old as of Friday.
There were observances in Portland at the Oregon Historical Society, where Pink Martini’s leader, Thomas Lauderdale, cut the cake, and in Salem, where House Speaker Tina Kotek did the honors.
Oregon was the 33rd state admitted to the union, a fact commemorated on the state seal by 33 stars.
According to an account on the historical society’s website, the bill granting statehood was signed on Feb. 14, 1859, by President James Buchanan, and the news took nearly a month to travel via telegraph, stagecoach and finally horseback to Salem.
