NEWPORT, Ore. — The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife has delayed the state’s ocean commercial Dungeness crab season again, this time through Dec. 30.
The season is being delayed to allow the crabs to fill with more meat. The season on the Oregon coast typically opens Dec. 1 but can be delayed to ensure better quality and avoid wasting crab. The department says coast-wide quality testing showed some areas didn’t meet minimum preseason criteria.
In mid-November, the decision was made to delay the opening until Dec. 16.
Oregon Fish and Wildlife said Monday that recreational crab harvesting in the ocean and in Oregon’s bays will remain open.
