The Stillaguamish Valley Genealogical Society’s monthly meeting will be at 7 tonight at the society’s library, 135 N. Olympic Ave.
Larry Thompson, a member of the society, will speak about Norwegian genealogy and farm names.

Waterfront topic of meeting
The Edmonds City Council meets at 6 p.m. Tuesday to award construction for the Edmonds Waterfront Project.
The meeting will be at the Public Safety Complex, 250 Fifth Ave. N.
Afterwards, the council will adjourn to committee meetings, which are work sessions. The public is welcome, but comments aren’t taken.
The various committees will review the 2005 agenda, utility rates, reorganization of the recreation department and jail contracts with the county and Lynnwood.

Council proclaims MLK Days
The City Council recently proclaimed Tuesday through Jan. 17 as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Days.
Several events honoring King will be held in Everett on Thursday, including a speech by civil-rights leader Morris Dees.
The national Martin Luther King Jr. holiday is Jan. 17.
City praises work of Lincoln sailors
The City Council recently passed a resolution praising the work of sailors aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln and USS Shoup who are helping victims of the Dec. 26 earthquake and tsunami.
The Lincoln and Shoup are in Asia helping to provide humanitarian assistance and disaster relief.
Memorial topic of group’s meeting
The Port Gardner Neighborhood Association will meet at 7 tonight at the Port of Everett offices, 2911 Bond St.
Jerry Barhanovich of Everett will give a presentation with slides about a proposed memorial to fishermen, including photographs and an account of the fishing industry on the waterfront.
Neighbors also will talk about goals for 2005 and discuss changing the day the association meets.

Culinary society cooks Italian style
The Culinary Art Society will meet at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Camano Senior and Community Center, 606 Arrowhead Road, Camano Island.
Group members meet monthly to hone their cooking skills and compete if they want. This month’s category is Italian entrees or desserts. Three judges will taste the entries while the rest of the group listens to a presentation by one of the group’s members.
Those who wish to participate can taste the foods for $5. Members who do not wish to compete may bring a potluck dish or pay $5. Reservations are requested; newcomers are always welcome.
Annual membership costs $10.

Four annexations on city agenda
A public hearing on one annexation and the authorization of three others by petition will take place at the City Council meeting tonight at 7 at the Community and Senior Center, 1808 Main St.
The annexations are called the North Star, Crews, Monson and Pacific Ridge Homes annexations.
Also on the agenda is the election of a council president. And, Carl Johnson and Roger Schollenberg will be reappointed to the park board; Debra Ames to the library board; and Susan Lind, Janelle Panamaroff and Gisela Hinchcliffe to the arts commission.

Fire captain to be topic of meeting
The Lynnwood Civil Service Commission will hold a special meeting at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at City Hall, 19100 44th Ave. W.
The panel will review the fire captain eligibility list creation process.

Reception honors city manager
Bob Stowe, the city’s manager for nine years, is leaving his post.
A reception is scheduled 5-7 p.m. today. The event will be at City Hall, 15728 Main St.
Stowe has accepted a position with the city of Bothell.
Monroe
City makes new jail contract
The City Council has approved a new contract with Snohomish County for jail services.
The new rate will charge the city $85 for each inmate booking and $56 for a daily bed fee, down from $102.35 and $64.22. The new contract will start this month, based on an average of six inmate days, said Betty King, city clerk.

Special meeting planned tonight
The City Council will meet in a special meeting tonight at 7 in council chambers, 4480 Chennault Beach Road.
The meeting continues a public hearing on an ordinance amending fish and wildlife habitat conservation area regulations.
An executive session before that meeting at 6:30 p.m. will be held to discuss potential litigation.
Snohomish
Gallery features three artists
The Arts of Snohomish will feature three artists through Jan. 30 at its gallery, 105 Cedar St.
The featured artists are Ken Brookner, a photographer; Randall J. Hodges, a backpacker who takes scenery pictures; and Raniere, an artist who uses recycled materials to make things such as paper collages.
The gallery is admission free and closed Mondays.

Resource center looking for artists
The Stanwood Camano Community Resource Center is asking local artists to donate their time and talent on a rotating schedule to work with middle and high school students.
