Arlington

Talk about family records on DVD

The Stillaguamish Valley Genealogical Society will have a guest speaker at its November meeting.

Duane Ownbey of Bright Drum Production will talk about recording family histories on DVD.

The meeting starts at 7 tonight at the society’s library, 135 N. Olympic Ave. A business meeting will follow the program. Visitors are welcome.

Everett

Port Gardner to discuss ‘Scoop’

The Port Gardner Neighborhood Association will meet at 7 tonight at the Port of Everett Offices, 2911 Bond St.David Dilgard will give a slide presentation about the late U.S. Sen. Henry M. “Scoop” Jackson and his childhood neighborhood around Longfellow School, north of 37th Street to Pacific Avenue, east to Broadway and west to Rucker Avenue.

Everett planner Ross Johnson and Wendy McClure will describe a survey designed especially for residents of Jackson’s old neighborhood.

South Forest Park neighbors to meet

The South Forest Park Neighborhood Association will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Zion Lutheran Church, 4634 S. Alger Ave.

John McAlpine from Catholic Community Services will speak about the organization, which is accepting donations for neighbors in need.

Also speaking will be Herald assistant city editor Theresa Goffredo and Everett reporter Jennifer Warnick, who will discuss the best ways for neighbors to get news, events and information in the paper.

Residents will also discuss 2005 goals for creating a sport court on College Avenue.

Island County

County meeting to set hearing date

Island County Commissioners will meet in a regular session at 9:30 a.m. today in the Island County Annex Building, 1 NE Sixth St., Coupeville.

The agenda includes setting public hearing dates in December for adopting an excise tax for timber harvested on public lands. Hearing dates for other road and sewer projects are also scheduled to be set for December.

Lynnwood

Budget hearing set for tonight

The city of Lynnwood will have a public hearing on its proposed 2005-06 budget at its meeting tonight.

The meeting begins at 7 p.m. at City Hall, 19100 44th Ave. W.

The council will also consider whether to adopt the budget tonight.

Two other hearings, on preliminary plats for Cedarhurst and Birchwood Meadows, are also scheduled.

Marysville

Learn to decorate ornaments

The Marysville Parks and Recreation Department offers two classes on holiday ornament decorating. Classes for youth ages 5 and up will be offered Nov. 20 to decorate a selection of wood ornaments. Class is 9 a.m.-noon and costs $12. An adult class will be 6-9 p.m. Dec. 14 for participants ages 16-adult to decorate glass ornaments. Cost is $17. Each participant needs to bring paint brushes, all other supplies are included. Call the Marysville Parks and Recreation Department at 360-651-5085 for registration information.

Monroe

Summit focuses on local farming

Snohomish County will hold a summit with farmers, business leaders and local government officials aimed at improving the local agriculture economy 7 a.m.-4 p.m. Nov. 18 at the Evergreen State Fairgrounds.

Dr. John Ikerd, a farm economist from the University of Missouri, will talk about the changing face of family farms, entrepreneurship, niche marketing and growing a farm business.

Mukilteo

Sensitive areas ordinance meeting

The Mukilteo Planning Commission plans a public hearing Nov. 18 on a proposed ordinance governing geologically sensitive areas, such as steep slopes.

The hearing is scheduled for 7 p.m. at City Council chambers, 4480 Chennault Beach Road.

The ordinance addresses construction guidelines, the state Growth Management Act and applies updated science to city regulations.

Snohomish

Council builds road for business

The City Council recently approved a contract with Gott Construction Co. of Arlington to build a new access road from First Street to Snohomish Iron Works in downtown. The project is estimated to cost $30,000.

The business’s current access road will be eliminated by the construction of the city’s new visitor information center. The new road will be built on the city’s property and the business’s property.

Stanwood

AAUW plans book review lunch

The Arlington-Stanwood branch of the American Association of University Women have scheduled a luncheon meeting at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Merrill Gardens, 7212 265th St. NW.

Chris Satterlund and Kristine Kaufman from Snow Goose Bookstore will present book reviews.
