Edmonds

City program to teach soccer skills

Children can learn basic soccer skills through a program being offered by Edmonds Parks and Recreation.

The classes are scheduled for Fridays from July 13 through Aug. 31. Times for each class are scheduled to vary. The classes cost $61 and will be held at Edmonds City Park at 600 Third Ave. S.

The program offers different age brackets for children 2 to 11 years old. Shin guards are required.

Everett

Garden tour coming up

The seventh annual Gardens of Merit Tour is scheduled to take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

The tour includes viewings of the Evergreen Arboretum at Legion Park, 145 Alverson Blvd., and a peek at seven private gardens in the city.

Each was chosen for unique style, size and design.

Island County

Tax exemptions to be explained

An informational program on property tax exemptions and deferrals is planned for 12:45 p.m. Wednesday at the Camano Senior and Community Center, 606 Arrowhead Road.

The session is scheduled to be presented by Island County assessor Dave Mattens and Morrie Parker, senior citizen administrator.

Historical society meets Wednesday

The Lake Stevens Historical Society invites the public to its semi-annual meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Lake Stevens School District Educational Service Center, 12309 22nd St. NE.

Lynnwood

Program rewards summer reading

Teens who continue reading through the summer can receive rewards through a program being offered by the Lynnwood Library.

The program, called Teens Read Through the Summer, rewards teens for submitting reviews of the books they’ve read. Participants can receive Everett AquaSox tickets, gift books or the grand prize of an iPod Nano.

The Fred Meyer Foundation awarded the library a $923 grant to help pay for some of the gift books.

Marysville

City has opening on salary panel

Marysville is seeking a resident to fill a vacancy on its salary commission.

The volunteer panel is an independent, seven-member commission that annually reviews compensation for the city’s mayor and council members.

Anyone may submit a letter of interest to assistant administrative services director Tracy Jeffries, Marysville City Hall, 1049 State Ave., Marysville, WA 98270. The deadline is 5 p.m. July 6. For more information call City Hall at 360-363-8085.

Monroe

Kiwanis club has garage sale

The Monroe Kiwanis Club will have a community garage sale from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday at the Ben Franklin west parking lot, 19505 U.S. 2. Proceeds will go to the club’s scholarship fund. Call 360-805-6304 to reserve a space.

Mountlake Terrace

City slices days off permit reviews

The time it takes for plans and permits to be reviewed in Mountlake Terrace decreased from 19 days in 2004 to 11 days in 2006, according to a report issued by the city’s development services staff.

The report identified efforts the city has made to improve customer service. This included redesigning forms for permits to be more customer-friendly, adding help at the counter, updating city codes and improving customer relations.

In 2006, development services staff performed 5,900 inspections, took 7,500 phone calls, talked to more than 4,000 people at the front counter and issued 1,850 permits and entitlements for nearly $30 million worth of projects.

Snohomish

Committee meets to discuss train

The city’s economic development committee is scheduled to meet at 4 p.m. on Wednesday at City Hall, 116 Union Ave. The committee plans to discuss several items, including the Spirit of Washington Dinner Train.

Forum focuses on at-risk youth

A free community networking and education forum is scheduled for 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday at the Stanwood Fire Department, 8117 267th St. NW. Dinner will be provided.

The title of the forum is “How to Recognize At-Risk Youth and What a Community Might Do About It.” All Stanwood and Camano Island residents are welcome.
