The Arlington Planning Commission meets at 7 tonight at the Arlington Boys and Girls Club, 18513 59th Ave. NE.

The commission will continue discussing proposed new design guidelines for the Old Town area, as well as proposed sign guidelines.

Both issues were tabled by the Arlington City Council and left out of a recent overhaul of the city’s development code to give the commission and the council more time to hammer out the details.

Edmonds

Video system on tonight’s agenda

A report on final construction costs for the City Council Chambers video system is on the City Council agenda for tonight.

The meeting is 7-10 p.m. in the Public Safety Complex, 250 Fifth Ave. N.

Also on the agenda are: an agreement with Lynnwood over water and sewer; clarifying the nonrefundability of certain veterinarian fees for the adoption of cats and dogs; and an appeal of an Architectural Design Board decision.

Everett

Keep it clean in the neighborhood

The Riverside Neighborhood will hold its annual cleanup 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Bethany Christian Assembly, 2715 Everett Ave.

Neighborhood residents can bring yard waste, furniture, metal and wood scrap for disposal. No appliances, household waste, vehicle parts, computer monitors or TVs are allowed.

Island County

Commission calls special session

The Island County commissioners will meet in a special session at 6 tonight at the Camano Country Clubhouse, 1243 S. Beach Drive.

The meeting will be a public hearing about whether to adopt an interim measure that designates two plats called Thunder Ridge – located near the central part of the island on E. Camano Drive – as a critical drainage area.

Lake Stevens

Sewer district board meeting

The Lake Stevens Sewer District commissioners will discuss the adoption and incorporation of a wastewater treatment facilities plan at the board meeting Thursday.

Other agenda items include an update on lift station 15, adoption of a proposed comprehensive plan amendment, modification to an existing facilities charge and an update on office facilities.

The board meets at 3:30 p.m. at the district office, 9327 Fourth St. NE, Suite 8, in Everett.

“Walk to School Day” Wednesday

Emerson Elementary School in Lake Stevens will be joining schools around the world Wednesday to celebrate “Walk to School Day.”

Teachers, parents and community leaders will join about 400 children in the event’s seventh year, which begins at 8 a.m. The idea is to walk together to promote health, safety, physical activity and concern for the environment. Walkers from the U.S. will be joined by at least 32 countries around the world.

Other activities associated with the walk include an assembly with Sally Suze Caring Clown, who will entertain students with a bike-helmet-wearing “safety chicken.”

Lane on Vernon Road to close

A single lane of traffic on Vernon Road will be closed to through traffic between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. today.

The closure will affect traffic in the 1900 block while SRV Construction works on a sewer lift station.

Maltby

BPA power foes scheduled to meet

Maltby neighbors opposed to the Bonneville Power Administration’s voltage increase on a section of south Snohomish County lines are meeting at 7 tonight at the Cathcart-area’s Horseshoe Grange, Broadway Avenue and 164th Street.

Marysville

Bookbinding class to start soon

Ken Monson will be the instructor for a bookbinding class offered by the city Parks and Recreation Department Nov. 1.

The workshop will be 9 a.m.-5 p.m. at the Jennings Memorial Park Barn, 6915 Armar Road.

The class is for ages 12 and older and costs $30. An additional $30 materials fee includes a book press, leather, book cloth, cover materials, one book and a journal.

Students will refurbish a book, make a book from loose sheets, make a hard cover, learn about foil stamping, book decoration, supply and information sources and organizations for further study.

Mill Creek

Town Center

design on agenda

The Mill Creek City Council will have a study session at 6 tonight at City Hall, 15728 Mill Creek Blvd.

The council will discuss Town Center design guidelines, entry markers, acquisition of easements and Community Center public information and outreach programs.

Monroe

Council begins budget process

The Monroe City Council will meet at a special time and place Wednesday to discuss the first draft of the 2004 city budget.

The workshop meeting will be at 6 p.m. in the public works lunchroom to allow city officials, city employees and the public to discuss the budget more informally.

The public works cafeteria is one of the portable buildings on the Monroe City Hall campus. There will be signs Wednesday evening to direct attendees to the lunchroom.

Mukilteo

Teen wins junior pageant award

National American Miss has named Jean-Sun Ahn of Mukilteo National American Miss Junior Teen, which means she will compete for the Miss Teen national title in Anaheim, Calif., on Thanksgiving week.

Ahn is a 14-year-old ninth-grader at Kamiak High School in Mukilteo.

She received a crown, banner, trophy and $1,000 award, according to a National American Miss news release.

Snohomish

Sims to speak

to county’s Dems

The next Snohomish County Democratic Central Committee meeting is at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Snohomish School District Resource and Service Center, 1601 Ave. D.

The featured speaker is King County Executive Ron Sims, candidate for governor in 2004.

After Sims speaks, attendees are invited to work for the campaigns of committee-endorsed candidates running for the Nov. 4 general election.

Road repairs near Jackson Gulch

A 24-hour daily road closure has been extended until 5 p.m. Oct. 20 to complete road repairs on 236th Street NE (Jackson Gulch) between old Highway 99 and Fourth Avenue NW.
