Everett: Chamber to rally for campus

The Everett Area Chamber of Commerce is holding a luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Everett Golf &Country Club, 1500 52nd St. SE to discuss the effort to bring a University of Washington branch campus to Snohomish County.

Tickets cost $35 for any chambers of commerce or Economic Development Council member. For others, the cost is $50.

The business group function follows a town hall meeting in Everett last week that drew more than 300 people. Four sites in the county remain in contention for a new branch campus. Everett has two sites. Marysville and Lake Stevens have one each.

Everett since January has spent about $100,000 for lobbyists and outside consultants with expertise in higher education, politics and land-use issues.

Everett Mayor Ray Stephanson and city consultant Dick Thompson, a former director of government relations for UW, will join Dr. Lee Huntsman, UW president emeritus, and Deb Merle, higher education adviser for the Governor’s Policy Office, during Wednesday’s talk. A question-and-answer session will follow.
