Person with measles was in Everett and Monroe area in June

Snohomish Health District warns that health care providers, restaurants and stores may have been at risk.

MONROE — A measles infection was confirmed this weekend in someone who visited several places in Snohomish County in late June.

A member of a large group of foreign minors visiting several states during a summer program was confirmed to have the disease by health officials, Snohomish Health District said. The district is monitoring the health of other host family members who were exposed and are believed to not be immune to measles.

The risk to the general public is low, the health district said, because most people have immunity through vaccination. Health officials recommend that anyone who came in contact with the person or was in the same place around the same time as someone with measles find out if they were vaccinated or have had measles before.

Locations where the minor may have exposed others to measles include: Monroe Walmart on June 20, Monroe McDonald’s at 19515 U.S. 2 on June 21, Monroe Dairy Queen at 19510 U.S. 2 on June 21, the Monroe YMCA on June 21, Providence Regional Medical Center Everett on June 22 and 23, Wendy’s at 2510 Broadway in Everett on June 23, Providence Monroe Clinic Pharmacy on June 24, Swedish Redmond Clinic on June 27, and Providence Monroe Laboratory on June 27.

Measles is a highly contagious disease that can be severe. It causes coughing, fever, rash, and red, watery eyes. Coughing and sneezing is the primary way it spreads. Symptoms show seven to 21 days after exposure and measles is contagious four days before and after a rash appears.

Someone who develops an illness with fever or an unexplained rash between June 21 and July 12 should call a health care provider. Anyone who is not vaccinated for measles, pregnant women, children 6 months old and younger, and anyone with a weakened immune system are considered at high risk from measles.
