TACOMA — Authorities evacuated part of a Tacoma neighborhood, including an elementary school, while they removed an explosive device that they later detonated.
Tacoma police say Wednesday afternoon they asked residents near McKinley Avenue East and East 50th Street to stay inside as they closed area streets. Students at Sheridan Elementary School were evacuated to another school while other schools nearby continued classes with locked doors.
The News Tribune reported that officials declined to say where the device was found or if anyone was arrested but said it was removed Wednesday evening.
Police spokeswoman Loretta Cool said the device was detonated safely at about 7:30 p.m. Another official said it was detonated at the Tacoma landfill.
Police and agents from the Department of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are investigating.
