ARLINGTON — A Stanwood man shot another man in the stomach Wednesday after an argument over a suspected stolen cell phone, according to a new police report.
Around 2:30 p.m., a woman who had just come home from work saw a man outside sitting on his motorcycle in the 9600 block of Arlington Heights Road. He told her people were treating him like he wanted to steal something, according to the report filed Thursday in Everett District Court.
Another man, 35, had lost his phone and thought the man on the motorcycle took it, according to police.
The man walked by the motorcyclist, knocked a bag out of his hands and the two argued. The Stanwood man pulled out a gun and pointed it at the man on the motorcycle, police said.
“If you’re going to point a gun at me you better use it or I’ll beat your (expletive) with it,” the motorcyclist reportedly said.
The 35-year-old told police he “feared for his life” and shot the man with a .38-caliber Ruger pistol.
The woman along with other neighbors applied pressure to the wounded man’s stomach as they waited for help. The suspected shooter drove away in a black four-door Honda, police said.
Deputies and firefighters responded, police wrote. There was no exit wound, but responders could feel the bullet in his lower back. The man was taken to Providence Regional Medical Center Everett. He had part of his small intestines removed and also suffered spinal injuries, according to the report.
Around 30 minutes later, sheriff’s deputies found the suspect’s car a few miles away in north Snohomish County. Deputies arrested him for investigation of first-degree assault.
The defendant had no previous criminal history, his public defender said in court Thursday. At his bail hearing Thursday, Everett District Court Judge Tam Bui found probable cause and set bail at $25,000.
