PORTLAND, Ore. — The National Trust for Historic Preservation has labeled a Portland building a National Treasure in an effort to help save it.
The Oregonian/Oregon Live reports that the designation was announced Thursday. It doesn’t offer special protections, but it means the preservation group is invested in the future of the Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
The 56-year-old sports venue is known for its modern architectural style, but it has racked up deferred maintenance and become a money pit for the city.
Its future has been uncertain since 2009, when the mayor considered tearing it down. There’s been talk of fixing it up, but a study found that remodeling would still result in a loss of money.
The national nonprofit hopes to identify a financially viable model to preserve the building.
