At least two Snohomish County postal centers plan to send mail for free to local residents who have been called up for duty in Operation Enduring Freedom. They’ll collect individually addressed letters and cards, but no packages, for deployed service members from this area and send them out each week in a Priority Mail envelope, at no charge to the sender.
"We’re catering to the military around here, so this is our way of helping out," said Linde Grinde, who owns Stowaway Storage and Mail Center in Arlington. Many families with sailors based at Naval Station Everett live in the Marysville and Arlington areas. A support complex is located in Smokey Point, and special housing for military families is nearby.
Grinde said she has seen an increase in storage needs from local service members who were shipped out, so she was happy to join the Neighborhood Postal Center’s national "Operation Mail for Freedom" campaign this week.
Mailboxes Plus on the Mukilteo Speedway in Mukilteo is also offering the service.
