Premier golf course sold to millionaire

MUKILTEO – Harbour Pointe Golf Club, one of the premier public golf courses in Western Washington, is in the process of being sold to Scott Oki, a former Microsoft executive, multimillionaire and golf enthusiast who owns seven other public and private courses in the Puget Sound region.

Details of the sale are still being finalized and may not be completed for several months.

Harbour Pointe is currently owned by a group of about 20 investors. The majority owner is Ed Hansen, a former two-term mayor of Everett and current general manager of the Snohomish County PUD, who will retire at the end of June.

Reached by telephone Thursday at his Arizona residence, Hansen declined to comment on the sale, citing a confidentiality agreement included in a letter-of-intent document that is a prelude to the sale.

Mark Rhodes, the general manager at Harbour Pointe and a minority owner, could not be reached for comment Thursday.

Likewise, Oki Golf spokesman George Cox said, “We just can’t comment at this point.”

Oki, a 1966 graduate of Seattle’s Franklin High School, started at Microsoft in 1982 and within 10 years was promoted to senior vice president of sales and marketing. He retired in 1992 at age 43 with millions of dollars in stock options, giving him the opportunity to pursue two primary interests – philanthropy and golf.

As his love of golf grew, Oki decided he wanted to own and develop golf courses. His first purchase was Echo Falls Golf Club outside Snohomish, and he continued to add to his portfolio of properties in the ensuing years. All are in Western Washington.

Oki Golf purchased two of Washington’s other top public courses – Auburn’s Washington National Golf Club and Port Orchard’s Trophy Lake Golf and Casting – in December.

By purchasing Harbour Pointe, Oki will acquire one of the region’s most scenic and challenging golf courses. It opened in the Harbour Pointe area of south Snohomish County with nine holes in 1989, and nine more holes were added a year later.

Over the years, accolades have come frequently for Harbour Pointe, including the best new public golf course award from Golf Digest magazine in 1991.
