More than 30 members of The Herald’s Reader Network sounded off on Monday’s news that Boeing Co. chief executive Harry Stonecipher had resigned under pressure.
Here are some of their comments:
“I think the board overreacted, but then the board members are mostly people of an age where they are a bit prudish. I do not see it making any difference in the future of the company.”
– Teri Anne Beauchamp, Everett
“I have much more interest in CEO Harry Stonecipher’s business expertise and safety of the Boeing aircraft than his love life.”
– Vaughn Blethen, Marysville
“Mr. Stonecipher was not the leader Boeing needed or wanted. I find it disheartening to say the least that someone would jeopardize his reputation as a leader for purely selfish reasons. … Maybe this will be a blessing for Boeing – better leadership, higher standards, a clearer future.”
– Rebecca Boyd, Marysville
“Shocked, that’s how I reacted to the Stonecipher dismissal. … I just hope that they didn’t use this relationship as an excuse to drive him out for other reasons.”
– Rebecca Collins, Everett
“Maybe this will get Alan Mulally in and a conceivable return to the Boeing that used to be a good place to work before the influx of McDonnell-Douglas ‘talent.’”
– George Hadley, Normandy Park
“While we are not Stonecipher fans, dismissing him for sexual issues is foolishness. That level of dalliance happens everywhere. Nevertheless, the company will be better off without him.”
– Ann Harris, Everett
“If we have learned anything from the Tricky Rick (Neuheisel) story, then Horny Harry ought to be coming out fine on this one. He should be getting millions of dollars from Boeing soon because the trend seems to be: break the law, break the rules, be unethical – get paid big money.”
– Tom Jones, Everett
“This man isn’t stupid, but this was a very idiotic move on his part. He jeopardized his career for a good time. … and what about the other woman? Is she going to be punished?
– Carol Lewellen, Lynnwood
“Stonecipher was hired to clean up the image of Boeing and he comes in and dirties it even more. He should be run out of town.”
– Karen Muller, Sultan
“Stonecipher’s firing was the right thing to do. Maybe now Boeing can get rid of the McDonnell-Douglas way of thinking and bring headquarters back to Seattle where it belongs.”
– Renee Ripley, Mukilteo
“It was the right thing to do – fire him. What I don’t like about this whole thing is that the female exec he was fooling around with has gone unnamed and she is still employed. Wouldn’t you say this is a double standard? She is just as guilty as he is.”
– Susan Sheehan, Bothell
“A few weeks ago they took all the Northwest employees to the Tacoma Dome for a mandatory afternoon ‘Morals &Ethics’ meeting. I guess they forgot to invite someone?”
– Syd Zenger, Edmonds
