Gang member charged in man’s shooting death

A member of a Central American gang was charged Tuesday with first-degree murder in the Sept. 26 shooting death of Florencio Perez Silva, 24, of Everett.

Leonel Fernando Cortez, 25, of Federal Way is being held on $1 million bail. Perez Silva was found in the driveway of a home in the 12100 block of 11th Place SW. He had been shot twice in the head and once in the hand.

Deputy prosecutor John Adcock said Fernando Cortez told Snohomish County sheriff’s detectives that he at first intended to fight the victim, but then decided to kill him.

Perez Silva had bragged about being a member of a rival gang. Adcock alleges that Fernando Cortez is a member of the Mara Salvatrucha gang of El Salvador.

Everett man charged with assault, burglary

A 37-year-old Everett man was charged Tuesday with first-degree burglary and first-degree assault for allegedly breaking into a south Everett motel room and stabbing a man who was with his ex-girlfriend.

Eugene Allen Culp, 37, was armed with a knife and a golf club when he broke into the motel room Oct. 29, deputy prosecutor Erica Temple said.

Documents say the victim may have averted being stabbed more than once because he was wearing a bulletproof vest because of threats Culp had made earlier. Culp is being held on $100,000 bail.
