Edmonds scholarships: Edmonds-Woodway High School seniors Joseph McCleary, Terra Hoover and Channing Jones each received a $1,500 scholarship from the Edmonds Police Foundation.
All three are members of Drug Abuse Resistance Education’s role model program. Selection was based upon a range of criteria such as grade point level, involvement in student government, sports and other school activities, classes taken, community volunteer work as well as letters of recommendation from teachers and staff.
Park award: Jong Kwan “J.K.” Park of Mill Creek is the 2005 Senior Man of the Year at Grove City College in Pennsylvania
Christopher appointed: Cascadia Community College Board of Trustees in Bothell hired Dr. William Christopher as president of the college. He will earn $160,000 per year and will assume leadership July 1. Christopher is president of the Rock Creek Campus of Portland Community College in Portland,Ore.
New PTA director: Bonnie Kayla, Everett, was elected as Region 7 director of the Washington State Parent Teacher Association. The region includes Island and Snohomish counties. Kayla served as vice-president of the Everett PTA Council. She began her involvement with PTA at James Monroe Elementary School in Everett.
Cascade PTA: Recipients of the Parent Teacher Association Golden Acorn Award at Cascade View Elementary School in Snohomish are Paul Magnus and Debbie Hansen-Johnson, parents and volunteers at the school.
Devos to attend forum: Danielle Devos of Monroe will attend the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine this summer in Pennsylvania.
Alternative high scholarships: Five students from local alternative high schools have been awarded scholarships for post-secondary education by the Washington Association of Learning Alternatives:
Logan Wilson of AIM High School in Snohomish was awarded a $500 scholarship. Logan is planning to attend Everett Community College to study accounting and English.
Candi Rife of Sequoia High School in Everett was awarded a $250 scholarship. Candi is planning to attend EvCC to study business.
Brittany LaRiviere of Sequoia was awarded a $1,000 scholarship. Brittany is planning to attend EvCC to study business and accounting.
Alexandra Curry of Sequoia was awarded a $250 scholarship. Alexandra plans to attend Northwest Hair Academy to study cosmetology and photography.
Stacie Bonner of Sequoia was awarded a $250 scholarship. Stacie plans to attend Pima Medical Institute to study veterinary technology.
Artist of note: Brian Call, a Snohomish High School senior, was one of 10 students statewide chosen for Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction’s 32nd annual High School Art Show in Olympia. Call was the State Board of Education’s choice with his watercolor and ink still-life, “Self Portrait,” depicting musical instruments. The 10 students were selected from a pool of 115 teenage artists. Their winning works will remain on display through June 1 on the second floor of the OSPI building in Olympia. OSPI will purchase the artworks to include in its permanent art collection. Students first participated in regional art shows held by the state’s nine Educational Service District offices. Winning pieces from each district were then submitted to OSPI. See the winning works at www.k12.wa.us/ curriculumInstruct/arts. This year’s theme was “Authentic Art.”
Outstanding dental student: Kyle Schmidt, son of Bill and Susie Schmidt of Marysville, was one of 80 students in the class of 2005 awarded the Academic Excellence Silver Award at Loma Linda University School of Dentistry, California. Kyle is to graduate this month. The silver award is given to students who achieve scores of one standard deviation above the national mean on either of the Dental National Board’s two examinations, given as part of predoctoral requirements.
On key: Music students from several local high schools performed well at the recent WIAA-WMEA State Solo and Ensemble Contest in Ellensburg.
Snohomish High School’s “Marimboys” took first place in the small percussion ensemble division.
Aaron Voros of Edmonds-Woodway High School took first place in snare drum and mallets. Aaron also took second place in timpani.
Ian Jellison of Kamiak High School in Mukilteo took first among tenor-baritone sax players.
Brianne Leuth of Kamiak tied for first among sopranos.
Kamiak’s “Rat Pac” took third place in the large men’s vocal category.
Graham Logen of Stanwood High School placed second in bassoon.
Chris Lennard of Snohomish High School placed second in both mallets and multiple percussion.
Andrea Woods of Cascade High School in Everett tied for second in the flute-piccolo category.
Rachel Rice of Cascade took third in clarinet.
Ksenia Popova of Kamiak tied for third among sopranos.
Students from Monroe, Cascade, Jackson, Edmonds-Woodway, Meadowdale, Kamiak, Lynnwood, Mountlake Terrace, Snohomish, Stanwood, Oak Harbor and South Whidbey high schools also received superior ratings at the competition.
WAVE winners: Edmonds Community College students Sheri Jones of Arlington, Sarah Edmark of Snohomish and Leilani Leighton of Lynnwood received Washington Award for Vocational Excellence scholarships. They are each earning two-year associate of technical arts degrees at the college in landscape design (Jones), culinary arts (Edmark) and business information technology (Leighton). The scholarship honors students for outstanding achievement in vocational-technical education and awards them six quarters of tuition at a regional college or university of their choice. Jones plans to continue her studies of landscape architecture at the University of Washington. Edmark plans to continue her education and seek a bachelor’s degree. Leighton has more than 15 years experience working in offices. With her degree, she will seek a position as an administrative assistant.
