Young artists on display at Schack

Schack Art Center is showing the 2015 Scholastic Art Awards and Exhibit through Feb. 22, featuring hundreds of works of art from local student artists. Out of the more than 1,000 entries received from 37 Snohomish County schools, the jurors selected five pieces as the American Vision Best of Show recipients:

Emily Jones, Henry M. Jackson High School, for “City Life;”

Chan Ha Kim, Henry M. Jackson High School, for “Finding Birds;”

Kaelyn Thede, Snohomish High School, for “Last Birthday;”

Minkyu Kang, Kamiak High School, for “Manifestation;”

Allison Vu, a senior at Kamiak High School in Mukilteo, was awarded the $1,000 Susan Jane Russell Art Scholarship. Vu will have her own section in the Scholastic Art Portfolio exhibit at the Schack.

A Night of Notables at Meadowdale

The fourth-graders at Meadowdale Elementary School in Lynnwood held a Night of the Notables on Jan. 28. They researched a famous person and studied the genre of biography. Their knowledge was celebrated at an event where guests asked questions and tried to guess their identities. Finally, students took to the stage to reveal their identities.

Notable figures represented included Susan B. Anthony, Anne Frank, Helen Keller, Sacajawea, Abraham Lincoln, Pele, John F. Kennedy, Sonja Henie, Albert Einstein, Amelia Earhart, Henry Ford, Rachel Carson, Leonardo DaVinci, and Queen Elizabeth I.

Hard-working Monroe teen honored by NAACP

Monroe High School student Chawin Pathompornvivat has been named the Snohomish County NAACP student of the month for January. Pathompornvivat came from Thailand with his parents when he was 7 years old. The family ended up in Monroe to help with his uncle’s restaurant, Ben Jarong Thai.

“I came to America not knowing any English and then I felt bad that I was lowest in class,” Pathompornvivat said. “So I tried very hard to get to the top of the class and challenge myself to see how much farther I can go. … “Now when I see people struggling, I try to help them.”

Pathompornvivat volunteers at the Monroe Library and is a member of the National Technical Honor Society, which helps senior citizens with technical challenges. He is the captain of the cross country team. He has been accepted to the University of Washington this fall.

Everett teen wins national essay contest

Everett High School and Ocean Research College Academy (ORCA) student Sophia Maggio, 16, took top honors in the “Best Essay — High School Division” of Constituting America’s annual “We the Future” contest. The national contest features original songs, short films, public service announcements, speeches, poems, drawings, photos and essays inspired by the U.S. Constitution.

Maggio will be awarded a $1,000 scholarship and a mentoring trip with Fox News’ Bret Baier and Brit Hume.

Granite Falls boy gets thumbs up from No. 25

Mountain Way Elementary School fifth-grader Maccoy Christy was one of 10 winners selected from more than 200 nominees to receive a gift card for free merchandise on Seattle Seahawks player Richard Sherman’s website. The honor was part of Blanket Coverage, a program of the Richard Sherman Family Foundation that helps provide students in low-income communities with school supplies and clothing.

“I have never been more impressed with the character of a student,” former teacher Joelle Wright said in her nomination letter for Maccoy. “(Other students) look up to him as a leader and a trustworthy friend. I think the most impressive thing about Maccoy is his compassion for others. … I am so stinkin’ proud of Maccoy.”

Maccoy cheered the Hawks at their NFC Championship game. His mentor through Big Brothers Big Sisters took Maccoy to the big game as his guest.

Basketball player brings MS awareness to the court

Nathan Tuck, a basketball player at Everett High School, organized a benefit during the Seagulls’ Feb. 6 game to raise awareness of multiple sclerosis. The effort brought in $429.49 for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society Greater Northwest Chapter.

Tuck knows people with MS, which affects more than 1,360 people in Snohomish County, and wanted to share what he’s learned. Local businessman Reid Shockey spoke at halftime about how living with MS has impacted his life. The home team wore orange socks and much of the home crowd donned orange, a color associated with MS awareness.

School donates lovies for traumatized kids

Students, families and staff at Martha Lake Elementary School donated more than 375 stuffed animals to Snohomish County Fire District 1. Firefighters give the toys to children they encounter who might be frightened, injured or sick. The stuffed animals were presented to fire district representatives at a school assembly in January. The Teddy Bear Drive was sponsored by the Martha Lake Elementary PTA.

Local students lobby for CTE

Haeley Johnston, a junior at Mountlake Terrace High School, and Colin Cuchna, a senior at Stanwood High School, took part in the annual CTE (Career and Technical Education) Civic Engagement Day held Feb. 4 at the state Capitol. The students attended as part of their duties as state officers of the Washington Technology Student Association, the largest STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) student leadership organization in the state. Student leaders from around the state met with members of the Legislature, received training about the legislative process, practiced how to interact with lawmakers and discussed issues that are important to CTE. The students also encouraged continued support of CTE and STEM classes and programs.

Teen volunteer honored by Rotary

The South Everett-Mukilteo Rotary Club named Cascade High School’s Morgan Joyce as its January Student of the Month. Morgan has a 3.5 GPA and is enrolled in honors and AP classes. She is active in community service activities, including a Relay For Life fundraiser in memory of her friend who died of leukemia.

Lynnwood CTE students highlighted

The Alderwood-Terrace Rotary Club sponsors the Career and Technical (CTE) Student of the Month program at Lynnwood High School. The December and January honorees were senior Taylor Vance (drama) and junior Erich Kummert (business).

EvCC medical program makes list

Top Medical Assistant Schools ranked Everett Community College’s medical assisting program as the 31st best in the United States in its 2014 list of the country’s top 50 programs. The TopMedicalAssistantSchools.com website evaluated programs considering graduation rates, retention rates, tuition and other factors.

Granite Falls adds to hall of fame

The Granite Falls High School Alumni Hall of Fame has new members. The 2014-15 inductees are:

Joelle Wright, class of 1998, who returned to the district as a teacher and now teaches at Mountain Way Elementary School; and Peter Kirchgessner, class of 1964, a retired microbiologist who volunteers as a train crew conductor at the Northwest Railroad Museum in Snoqualmie.

The Alumni Hall of Fame was established in 1993 to promote and honor positive role models who were active in school activities, graduated from Granite Falls High School and have gone on to be positive, productive citizens and role models.

Local teams take home Vex awards

Cavelero Mid High School in Lake Stevens hosted a Vex Robotics Competition on Jan. 31, hosting more than 175 middle and high school students from more than 50 teams from across the state. Local schools fielding teams were Sky Valley Education Center in Monroe, Mariner High School in south Everett, Lake Stevens High School and Cavelero Mid High.

Tournament champions were Tech No Logic (Mariner High) and V-Bots Geoff (Lake Stevens High). C-Bots Vectron (Cavelero Mid High) won the Design Award. V-Bots Voltage (Lake Stevens High) won the Judges Award.

Monroe teens serve as pages

Rep. Dan Kristiansen sponsored two pages in the state House: Morgan Sedlak and McKenna Dahlinger, both from Sky Valley Education Center in Monroe. Pages deliver notes and documents. They also participate in mock committee meetings where they assume roles of state lawmakers, stakeholders and the public. They also attend page school, where a certified instructor teaches them about the legislative process. Sedlak’s favorite part of Olympia was the architecture. Dahlinger enjoyed the Temple of Justice.

Mukilteo hands out staff awards

Tory Kartchner, a math teacher at Mariner High School, and Laurie Gossett, an administrative assistant in the Mukilteo School District office, were the winners of the first-semester Lighthouse Award, the highest honor that can be bestowed on a Mukilteo School District employee. Both were honored for excellence in their positions, personal impact, positive relationships and for their special contributions of time, talent or effort to students, staff, the district and the community.

Lake Stevens honors staff

The Lake Stevens School Board on Feb. 11 honored the January recipients of the district’s Apple Award, the highest honor given to staff for exemplary work: Kim Askevold, paraeducator, Mt. Pilchuck Elementary School; Sarah Danielson, elementary literacy and administrative intern, Hillcrest Elementary School; Lisa Flinn, paraeducator, Skyline Elementary School; Theresa Mayer, paraeducator, Glenwood Elementary School; and Kathy Jo Steadman, bus driver.

Firefighters graduate

After 15 weeks of training, 21 Everett Community College Fire Academy students earned Firefighter I and II and Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations certificates in December: Sean Anderson, Aaron Boede, Daniel Bradley, Thomas Conto, John Courtade, Brent Duckworth, Mateo Galindez, Lauren Gustafson, Mitchel Hahn, Zachary Hanson, Alexander Jasper, Jeffrey Miller, Anthony Mozeak, Skyler Peterson, Jacob Pregler, Adam Schorsch, Casey Stockwell, Miranda Timonen, Theresa Tozier, Caleb Trudgeon, and Jared Valenta.
