Sultan band first at marching competition

The Sultan High School marching band placed first in the A/AA category at a marching band competition held recently at Tumwater High School, also winning Best Music, Best Marching and Best Color Guard. The marching band has 85 members, representing about 12 percent of the Sultan High student population. Drum majors are Amanda Young, Erika Levin and Nick Pardue. The marching band is directed by teacher Jill Sumpter and assistant band director Jon Pardue.

Evergreen students perform at state event

Six eighth-graders from Evergreen Middle School performed last weekend with 400 other middle school musicians as part of the 2006 Washington Music Educators Association (WMEA) Junior All-State East Band, Orchestra and Choir held at Lewis and Clark High School in Spokane. The annual event showcases some of the state’s most promising young musicians and vocalists. To be part of the event, students had to audition.

Archbishop Murphy math team wins

The Archbishop Thomas J. Murphy High School math team took first place over five other teams in a recent competition of calculation. Team members are Emily McClure, Cassie George, Siobhan Boyle, Matt Peterson and Taurus Vilgalys. Peter McDonnell won the individual competition. Shannon Hoban tied for second; McClure and Boyle tied for fifth.

KCTS awards Golden Apple to local teachers

Local individual and program winners of KCTS Television’s Golden Apple Awards for 2006 are:

Rojean Garnica, literacy, kindergarten to sixth grade, Mountlake Terrace Elementary School, Edmonds School District.

Construction Academy, 11th to 12th grades, Bothell High School, Northshore School District, instructor Calvin Pygott

Two named as National Merit finalists

Snohomish High School students Mallory Huntington and Jordan Reichelt were named among the 16,000 semifinalists nationwide in the National Merit Scholarship Program.

Cascade View PTA fundraiser a success

The Cascade View Elementary School PTA in Snohomish raised $17,800 at the school’s first Fund Run. The PTA will use the proceeds to buy technology or to fill other requests made by the teachers.

A group representing Washington’s principals honored Sen. Rosemary McAuliffe, D-Bothell, with its annual President’s Award for her leadership on education issues. McAuliffe recently accepted the award during the Association of Washington School Principals fall conference in Vancouver.
