Wanted: Mentors for Everett middle-schoolers

Gateway Middle School in Everett is seeking adults to mentor students for 30 to 45 minutes every other week.

School counselors started the adult mentor program in 2005.

Volunteers spend time with individual students providing motivation and accountability. Mentors might check up on students’ grades, review classroom work or help students set learning goals in classes.

“Some students don’t have consistent access to adults who value education and who take an interest in school work and learning,” Principal Cathy Woods said.

If interested, contact Connie Sperry at 425-385-6622 or csperry@everettsd.org.

Edmonds raises tuition for full-time kindergarten

Tuition for full-time kindergarten in the Edmonds School District will go up $250 next fall. The 2007-08 rate of $3,050 is about 9 percent higher than the current $2,800 rate.

The increase is pegged to higher salaries and benefits expected next school year.

High Everett property values lower levy rate

The estimated tax rate for Everett School District’s maintenance and operation levy in 2007 is now at $4.39 per $1,000 of property value, district staff said.

That’s lower than the estimate voters approved in February, at $4.99 per $1,000 value.

Higher housing values helped lower the estimate.

The operation levy helps cover day-to-day expenses, including portions of teacher salaries and programs such as athletics and other spending not fully covered by state funding.

Schools must make estimates early in the year when they seek to renew the levies even though they won’t take effect for nearly a year.
