Gateway gets a new principal for next fall
Gateway Middle School in the Everett School District has hired a new principal for next fall.
Peter Scott, assistant prinÂcipal at Evergreen Middle School in Everett, also has been a vice principal with the San Diego Unified School District. He also has been a math teacher in Boston, a research assistant at Harvard University, and a teaching and resource specialist in California.
Scott will replace Eldon Allen, who came out of retirement to serve as principal at Gateway this year.
Meadowdale ASL Club hosts dance troupe
The Meadowdale High School American Sign Language Club and the Madrona Vineyard Club are playing host to a dance troupe at 7 p.m. Thursday in the school’s Great Hall, 6002 168th St. SW.
The Eleanor Roosevelt Dance Co. is instructed by a hearing-impaired teacher at Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Maryland.
The cost is $5 for adults and $3 for students.

Sultan schools stage all-district concert
The Sultan School District will present the first of what it hopes will become an annual all-district music concert at 7 tonight at Sultan High School.
The concert will feature a communitywide evening of music and entertainment.
Music teachers from each of the four Sultan schools have selected music students to showcase the music programs at their respective schools. Superintendent Don Chaplik will present the music for the evening.
A PowerPoint presentation highlighting the importance of music in a complete education will play before the concert begins. The presentation will feature quotes, statistics of higher WASL scores and photos to set the stage for the evening’s performance.
The event is free.

Mukilteo hires new principal; other posts
The Mukilteo School District has made three recent hires for key administration positions for next fall.
Ann Lehinger will be the new executive director of elementary education. She has been an assistant principal in the Spokane School District and an elementary principal in the Mead School District in the Spokane area. She also has been director of human services, director of student services, executive director of human resources and executive director of elementary education for Mead.
Carole Lionberger will become director of career and technical education. She has held a variety of positions from middle school through community college, including vocational director in the Shelton School District, coordinator of professional and technical education for Spokane Public Schools, and director of career and technical administration and monitoring in the Colorado Community College System. She is now dean of business, hospitality and information technology at Spokane Community College.
Lynn Olsen will be the new principal at Picnic Point Elementary School next fall. She was an elementary teacher in the Northshore School District from 1988 through 2005 before becoming an assistant principal at Fernwood and Moorlands elementary schools in the Bothell-based district.
Mariner High alumni set scholarship fundraiser
The Mariner High School Alumni Association presents its second annual dinner and auction scholarship fundraiser for Mariner High School from 6 to 10 p.m. May 2 at The Manor, 13032 Admiralty Way, Everett.
This year’s dinner has a Cinco de Mayo theme with authentic Mexican food and alchoholic beverages. There will be silent and live auctions. The association is accepting donations for the auction.
Tickets for the dinner and auction are $35 per person.

Sultan refinances bonds to reduce tax levy
The Sultan School District has refinanced a portion of its outstanding school construction bonds to take advantage of lower interest rates.
The refinancing will save taxpayers nearly $173,189 during the next 10 years. The savings will be seen through reduced tax levies.
The district has been monitoring bond market conditions over the past year and recent low interest rates allowed the district to exceed its savings target. Interest rates averaged 3.19 percent on the new bonds compared with 5 percent on the old debt.
Scholarships available for students in Mukilteo
The Mukilteo Association of Classified Personnel is offering up to five scholarships of $1,000 each.
Four scholarships will be awarded to qualified graduating seniors — one each from Mariner, Kamiak, Sno-Isle Tech Skills Center and ACES, an alternative high school in the Mukilteo School District. The fifth scholarship is available to the qualified dependent of a member of the classified workers’ union.
Application packets are available in the career center or student office.
Scholarship awards are based on completion of paperwork, financial need, goals and graduation. This includes Running Start.

Garden club offers horticulture scholarship
The Alderwood Garden Club is offering a $750 scholarship to a student in a horticulture or horticulture-Ârelated field.
Applicants need to be graduating seniors in an Edmonds district high school who plan to enroll in a horticulture-Ârelated program in any school. Applicants also may be enrolled or plan to enroll in the Edmonds Community College horticultural program.
