SEATTLE — More people in the Seattle area are public transit in order to get around.
KIRO-FM reported that the Puget Sound Regional Council found that transit ridership has grown 12 percent from 2010 to 2015, more than doubling the region’s population growth in the same time period.
The council reported that 2015 was transit’s best year, with 179 million riders. Previously, 2014 had been the busiest year with 1.7 million fewer riders than 2015. Light rail saw the biggest increase in boardings, with a 59 percent increase since 2010.
The growth comes as service levels dropped about 3 percent in the last five years, mainly in Pierce County and with Community Transit north of Seattle.
