SEATTLE — Seattle is kicking off a pilot program to help keep trash from building up at unsanctioned homeless encampments.
KING-TV reports (http://goo.gl/1VwdsF ) that city officials this week will start distributing green trash bags to common hangouts near Interstate in hopes of encouraging those staying there to bag their refuse instead of leaving it on the street. City officials say they are still determining how frequently a contractor will collect the bags.
Officials say the bags are a way to easily encourage homeless people to collect their trash, as opposed to instructing them to walk three blocks to a garbage can.
The project will be tested in April and the City Council will consider expanding it after that.
