SEATTLE — Thornton Creek Elementary School in Seattle is the winner of a new award to honor creative teaching and innovative thinking.
The first Washington State Imagination Award, being presented today, means $5,000 for the school and two scholarships to a teachers seminar in New York.
The Imagination Award is being presented by Seattle’s Creativity Matters in partnership with New York City’s Lincoln Center. A similar honor has been presented in New York City public schools since 2006.
Two other finalists for the Washington award are Madrona K-8 in the Edmonds School District and Helen B. Stafford School in the Tacoma School District.
Thornton Creek Elementary is being recognized for the way the alternative elementary emphasizes learning by doing, with a particular focus on self-discovery and reflection.
