OLYMPIA — Seattle voters appear to be giving the go-ahead to a tunnel project that would reshape the city’s waterfront. Votes counted Tuesday night show a referendum on the plan being approved easily, 60 percent to 40 percent. Thousands of ballots still must be counted.
Officials have been debating how to replace the aging Alaskan Way Viaduct for years. Gov. Chris Gregoire called the results a “loud and clear” message that “it is time to move forward without delay.”
There were no statewide races on the Washington primary ballot.
In the Spokane mayor’s race, incumbent Mary Verner took a commanding lead in early returns with 61 percent. Challenger David Condon was in second place in the five-way race with 32 percent. The top two advance to the November general election.
In the Bellingham mayor’s race, preliminary results indicate incumbent Dan Pike will face former state legislator Kelli Linville in November. Pike had 39 percent and Linville 40 percent.
In Olympia, Mayor Pro-Tem Stephen Buxbaum and former KGY radio host Dick Pust apparently will face each other in the November mayoral general election.
