50 years ago (1958)
Thomas Squires showed off the new license plate on the back of his Ford station wagon. It was DAD 326, which was appropriate. Squires was indeed a father and was also a staff sergeant with the Training NCO of the 326th Fighter Group at Paine Air Force Base.
Top scholars at Everett Junior College for the fall quarter were students who earned straight-A grades. They were Gloria Oman, Yvonne Lervick, Madeline Torvinen, Sandra Person, Karen Stillman, Michael Garvey, Horace Hill, Ben Brower, Roland Mason, Don Senter, Vic Ruhl and Dan Stillman. Altogether, 122 students made the honor roll.
25 years ago (1983)
St. Mary Magdalene Roman Catholic Church in south Everett was celebrating its 25th anniversary with the return of former pastors, assistant pastors and teaching nuns as well as a Mass celebrated by Seattle Archbishop Raymond Hunthausen. The first pastor was the Rev. Bill Lane. The current pastor, the Rev. John Bowman, said there were 400 Catholics in the parish area in 1958 as compared with 1,600 now.
Allen Olson, senior class secretary at Marysville-Pilchuck High School, organized an event at the school for the Guinness Book of World Records. It was a musical performance of 996 kazoos playing something that sounded remotely like “Tequila.”
