50 years ago (1957)
Today’s major front page headline was about Sputnik II.
Once again the Russians had shocked us with yesterday’s launching of a second satellite. Much larger than the first, sent up on Oct. 4, this one carried a dog encased in an air-conditioned unit. A Soviet scientist hinted that the passenger might parachute safely back to earth, but this never happened.
Bowler Loretta Stanton of Everett won a spot in the Western Washington finals of the National Match Game tournament. She fashioned a 2188 total over 12 games to take second in the Northwest Washington eliminations at Queen Anne and Paladium alleys.
25 years ago (1982)
Among the winners in yesterday’s elections were Henry Jackson, who returned to the U.S. Senate, Seth Dawson as the next county prosecutor, and Matt Dillon to the PUD board. WPPSS critics won across the state, Lynnwood voters backed pulltabs and punchboards, and Lakewood voted to keep school bus service.
A new two-mile stretch of Highway 525 between the Alderwood Mall and Highway 99 was scheduled to open later this month.
It would provide a direct route from the shopping complex to Mukilteo, the Paine Field area and south Everett. Crews were busy striping and putting on other finishing touches.
