50 years ago (1955)
Dave Porter, 15, was the winner of the Soap Box Derby. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Porter. The new champion would next compete in the All-American Soap Box Derby in Akron, Ohio, Aug. 1. Gail Brown of the Everett Jaycees presented Porter with his championship trophy.
The 13-room Dr. Stauffer home at 3009 Hoyt Ave. was coming down. After the demolition, the ground was leveled to street level, just as had happened with houses to the north. The new Everett Federal Savings and Loan Association moved into that space. The house dated to the 1890s, when the area was one of the town’s finest.
25 years ago (1980)
Aircraft weren’t the only exhibits at the Washington State International Air Fair at Paine Field. The Atlantic Richfield Co. staged demonstrations of fuel-saving driving. The Lynnwood Rotary Club sponsored the fair.
The U.S. Forest Service ranger station at Verlot would not be moved. However, district ranger Jack Davis said that it might be enlarged. Moving the station to Granite Falls or Lake Stevens wasn’t feasible, said Jim Mitchell, state representative for Lake Stevens.
