50 years ago (1955)
The new turnoff for eastbound traffic on the U.S. 2 trestle was nearly completed. It would eliminate the necessity of cars crossing the westbound lane to turn off the highway at Ebey Island, a traffic hazard that had existed since the trestle was constructed.
A huge slash fire marked the clearing of land for the new Forest Crest School in Mountlake Terrace as bulldozers and trucks crawled over the tract. The 20-room school would be built in four sections: three classroom sections and a section for administrative offices, all-purpose rooms and other special rooms. Two other schools were being built in the Edmonds School District, at Woodway and Maplewood.
25 years ago (1980)
Writer Dave Workman wrote about getting to work in the snow from his Marysville home. He came across the flats at 4:45 a.m. on his cross-country skis.
The average 1980 model car from Detroit was selling for $7,550, 6.3 percent more than the previous year. The average car cost 36 percent of median family income of $21,000.
