EDMONDS — A shooting outside a popular waterfront dining spot in the middle of the day Saturday left one person dead and another hospitalized, Edmonds police said.
Investigators believe a man shot his sister then killed himself in the Arnies Restaurant parking lot. The woman’s husband and school-age son were nearby, but uninjured.
“This is being investigated as a domestic violence matter,” Edmonds police Sgt. Josh McClure said.
Police reassured the public that there was no ongoing danger and no suspects at large.
Officers responded at 11:43 a.m. to a report of a suicidal person and gunshots on Admiral Way near West Dayton Street. They found a man in his 50s dead in the parking lot from a gunshot wound, McClure said. Officers reported recovering a shotgun at the scene.
A woman in her 40s had been shot in the back, McClure said. She was taken by ambulance to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, where her condition was stable.
Witnesses told detectives that the man had approached her and opened fire before turning the gun on himself. That happened at her car — it was initially unclear whether inside or outside. Her husband and son were inside in the car.
Police believe the siblings had arrived at the restaurant for a larger family gathering, McClure said.
Violence is rare in downtown Edmonds. Saturday’s shooting, however, was less than two blocks from the Edmonds Senior Center, where a 23-year-old man from SeaTac was shot dead last month. That occurred late at night, McClure said, while the senior center was being rented out for a party that attracted people from throughout the region.
“They’re very different circumstances,” he said. “There doesn’t seem to be a common theme at all.”
The Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office arrived Saturday afternoon to start work to confirm the man’s identity and how he died.
