Sno-Isle Regional Library System Director Arthur Weeks resigned Monday to seek new directions personally and professionally.
The resignation was immediate. Weeks had served as director of the library system for just more than two years.
"It was a surprise to me, and I’m sure it will be for the rest of the board," said Dani Fowler, president of the trustees. "He worked very well with the board."
Fowler said she was not sure why he left, and she was not aware of any disputes.
The Sno-Isle trustees plan to meet this week to talk about naming an interim director, said Mary Kelly, spokeswoman for Sno-Isle.
As director, Weeks had been responsible for a $23 million annual budget and oversaw about 400 staff members throughout 20 libraries in Snohomish and Island counties. Weeks made $106,678 a year.
"I will forever hold dear the opportunity to explore new horizons, bring new opportunities, and be a part of the exciting growth this library system experienced in the time I have been here," he said in a prepared statement.
Weeks, a Camano Island resident, was unavailable for further comment.
Weeks has more than 20 years experience as a library manager. He served as executive director for the Finger Lakes Library System in New York state. Weeks was chosen by Sno-Ise after a national search that drew 29 candidates. He replaced Tom Mayer, who left to join the Gates Learning Foundation in Seattle.
Sno-Isle serves more than 550,000 residents in Snohomish and Island counties.
