EVERETT — The Northwest Aviation Consortium is coordinating a disaster response exercise next week in preparation for a potential earthquake or tsunami.
On June 6, the fire, police and naval agencies across the state will respond to the disaster scenario. In the simulation, buildings and elevated highways would suffer major damage and ground transportation would be restricted.
Supporting scenarios will include water rescues, high-rise rescues, police dog building searches, “aerial surveys” and equipment transport to support structural collapses, said Bill Quistorf, chief pilot for the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office.
According to the aviation consortium, the exercise is crucial for understanding the capabilities of agencies and who to call for assistance when a disaster happens.
Exercise activities at the Everett Naval Station’s base are expected around 10 a.m. to noon, according to Navy officials. Those nearby may hear “mass warning announcements” and see emergency response vehicles or low-flying aircraft around the base.
